Completed Build - FM 1/100 Gundam Barbatos

Let's kick things off with a build I completed a couple weeks ago. This 1/100 Barbatos was the first "major" Gunpla kit I built in over 10+ years. The Iron Blooded Orphans kits all seem to be very newcomer friendly, with good detail, inner frames, simple builds, and cheap prices.

Name: Gundam Barbatos [4th Form]
Model: ASW-G-08
Grade: Full Mechanics 1/100

Inner frame

After getting back into the hobby I decided that I would replace stickers with paint whenever possible and to also take time to detail as much as my skill/time allowed. I also hand paint all my kits since I can't use an airbrush for various reasons.

Paints
  • Vallejo Metal Color [Gunmetal Grey]
  • Vallejo Liquid Gold [Rich Gold]
  • Vallejo Liquid Silver

The Barbatos inner frame offers a lot of detailing opportunities. I first semi dry brushed the gunmetal on then painted the connectors gold and pistons/coils silver. I went over everything again with a dry brush of gunmetal for minor weathering. Everything was finally sealed using Vallejo Metal Gloss Varnish.

Armour

Colour separation is decent out of the box so I didn't have to paint much. All the yellow parts were painted gold and parts of the backpack was painted dark grey. I made a pretty noob mistake when painting the pink symbols. I wanted to get a metallic effect so I layered a silver base first. What I didn't know was that regular paints cannot be thinned into transparent paints, so my pink just ended up covering the silver. Oh well, live and learn.

Paint:
  • Vallejo Liquid Gold [Rich Gold]
  • Vallejo Liquid Silver
  • Vallejo Model Color [Black]
  • Vallejo Game Color [Dead White]
  • Vallejo Game Color [Scarlett Blood]
Panel lining was done using a Prismacolor 005 black pen. All gold parts were top coated using Pledge Floor Care Multi Surface (Future) and non gold parts top coated with Vallejo Polyurethane Matt Varnish. Both were hand brushed.

Accessories

It's unfortunate that the 1/100 doesn't come with the mace and it doesn't look like they want to release a weapons kit for this scale. Having said that, the katana is still pretty cool. Both were painted in gunmetal with the katana edge done in silver. I still have a really hard time painting white over dark colours. Might try laying down some grey primer next time.

Paints
  • Vallejo Metal Color [Gunmetal Grey]
  • Vallejo Liquid Gold [Rich Gold]
  • Vallejo Liquid Silver

That about wraps it up. On to the RX-78-02 Origin kit next!
